To model the eardrum, monks were given a cup, rubber band and rubber glove. The glove was cut into a thin sheet and stretched tight over the top of the cup. Rubber bands held the rubber sheet in place. Small pieces of paper or flowers were placed on top of the sheet and sounds were made to show how air pressure makes the membrane (eardrum) vibrate.
